Breast cancer is cancer that develops in the breast cells and progresses.

It is a common type of cancer. In Indian, more than 10 lakh cases are registered per year. It can be seen mostly in elderly women.

WHAT ARE THE CAUSES OF BREAST CANCER?

Breast cancer is caused when the DNA in breast cells mutate or change, disabling specific functions that control cell growth and division. In many cases, these mutated cells die or are attacked by the immune system. But some cells escape the immune system and grow unchecked, forming a tumor in the breast.

October being the breast cancer awareness month, I would like to draw your attention towards the most common type of cancer. Here are 5 early signs that may indicate the presence of breast cancer and how it can be treated.

5 SIGNS & SYMPTOMS

1)lump formation

2)peeling, scaling, crusting, or flaking of skin

3)redness or pitting

4)inverted nipples

5)changes in size and shape of the breast.

TREATMENT

Today there are so many approaches that can be made for the treatment of the cancer of the breasts such as surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, hormonal therapy, and recently added nanotechnology and gene therapy.

With the advances in screening, diagnosis, and treatment, the death rate for breast cancer has declined. About 90 percent of women newly diagnosed with breast cancer will survive for at least five years.

Research is ongoing to develop even more effective screening and treatment programs. While the research is ongoing let’s take some precautionary measures like

1.limiting alcohol consumption

2.breastfeeding for long term

3.by being physically active

4.eating and living a healthy lifestyle

5.maintaining a healthy weight

If in doubt feel free to consult your doctor as early detection could be treated easily.

Do not panic or hesitate to share it with your doctor and family.
